Massey Ranch is a fully functioning farm situated on a 220-acre property in the Town of Watertown. The ranch is located about five miles outside the city limits on Route 12 (outer Bradley Street).Owner-operator Shawn Massey purchased the land in 2009, and his residence was constructed on the site in 2010. He lives there with his wife, Meghan, and their children, Marissa and Hudson. The ranch produces over 5,000 top-quality bales of hay annually, most of which is sold to horse farms in the area. In 2012, a 30-by-60-foot hay barn was erected, giving the ranch the capacity to store up to 10,000 bales.Maple syrup is another specialty at the ranch. Over 500 trees were tapped this past season. Plans are in place to tap up to as many as 1,000 trees in coming years. The Massey crew employs a traditional method, using sap buckets and boiling over wood. The centerpiece of the ranch's maple production is a 12-by-20 sugar shanty that is continuously active during early spring.Besides syrup, Massey Ranch produces its own maple candy, maple cream and maple cotton candy.Another family favorite at the ranch is the 5-acre pumpkin patch. The wide varieties of pumpkin colors and sizes help to make the patch a popular destination. A selection of gourds and Indian corn is also presented. Wagon rides throughout the patch are a highlight of the fall.Bees are kept on the ranch during summer months. The bees aid the ranch with pollination, while the honey they produce is collected and available for purchase.
